Another long weekend is fast approaching. Do you have plans or do you need some inspiration for something to do with friends and family?
You don’t have to drive far to have an enjoyable long weekend outing. There are lots of summery things to do close to home.
Here’s a list of a few that come to mind.
Enjoy and be safe.
With the short amount of time we get to enjoy the hot sun, going to the beach is an obvious thing to do.
To find that great beach you’ve never visited here is a link to the best beaches of the Great Lakes:
To find a quieter beach closer to home try:
Port Albert and the the Port Albert General Store’s great food. link to Port Albert General Store
Black’s Point Beach (3 km south of Goderich) is definitely a rural beach. It’s not managed or trimmed but it’s quiet unique atmosphere is something your family will enjoy discovering. Here is link to Swim Guide for Black’s Point Beach along with a map. Link to The Swim Guide
Sunset Beach is another Goderich area beach that not too many people know about. Travel north of Goderich on #21, turn west/left on Sunset Beach Road all the way to the end and you’ll find a beach on the other side of the sand dune.
Goderich Historic Jail
If it’s an evening you looking to fill try visiting the historic jail in Goderich. Any day it’s a great view into the past, but if you go Tuesday or Thursday at 7 pm you’ll get the inside story from actors playing roles of various residents and staff at the Historic GAOL.
I’ve done this myself last year and thoroughly enjoyed learning about the way of life and workings of the institution. FYI, the craftsmanship of the stone and iron is amazing. Ask lots of questions and have fun.
Little know facts:
The jail was built 1939 – 1942 using stone from the Maitland River and some from Michigan.
It ended it’s service more recently then most would think, 1972
The last Canadian public hanging occurred here in 1869
Steven Truscott was held here in 1959
This was designed as temporary housing for criminals but someone with conditions like Down Syndrom or Tourettes could end up there since the society of the times didn’t know what else to do with them
my home is made from the left over stone from the jail, really.
Ice Cream Tour:
Summer is always a good time to enjoy ice cream. Be sure to stop in at your local ice cream shop like the Walton General Store.
Huron Kinloss has a list of local ice cream shops for your enjoyment. FYI, Holyrood has been reported to be the best. Link to the Ice Cream Trail
Sunday July 31 from 12:30 to 4:30, the Walton Raceway is the place to be for lots of flying mud.

The dry weather hasn’t let the corn grow too tall, but a maze and all the other activities will keep your family entertained.
