Many of us are watching the Olympics these days.
It’s strange how the Olympics can make us fans of the strangest sports. When else do we watch anyone on the uneven bars, trampoline or any rowing/kayak events?
We watch this HUGE production and are amazed by the abilities of the human body. How does one make a T while hanging from rings or stay above water while trying to throw a ball into the opponent’s net, all the while being pulled down by your opponents?
Our Canadian athletes have done a great job, especially our women. Why are we surprised, there are a lots of strong women among us. A lot of these strong women come from rural background. The down to earth, hard work the country life gives us will build character of mind and body. Here are a couple professionals with their findings:
Dale Henwood is president and CEO at the Canadian Sport Institute in Calgary. He says there are some main factors that contribute to excellence in an athlete which can sometimes translate to regional excellence. Among them is support, personal drive and access, but also a level of discomfort. He says in some cases, privilege can work against motivation.
“In a Canadian context, we have affluence, and that’s sometime more difficult to work with in sports,” says Henwood. “Here we’re comfortable. I’ve been to places around the globe with world class facilities and no athletes in them, and other places with not-so-great facilities, but they’re in full use.”
While athletes from smaller towns are often seen as underdogs, Henwood thinks they may actually have an advantage. Less competition for practice time on the ice and more access to a coach might help explain why many world class athletes and Olympians emerge from small towns.
A co-author of the studies, Queen’s University’s Jean Côté, attributed the small-town over representation to a number of factors. These include the accessibility of sports role models in little towns, the cultural values placed on sport (think “Hoosiers”), and even the “big fish little pond” effect, which can be a positive reinforcer for young athletes. Dr. Côté also argues that, despite the prevailing notion that kids need to specialize early and immerse themselves in 10,000 hours of repetitive training, small-town athletes excel precisely because they spend more time playing outside of schools and leagues.
“In bigger cities, youth sport is over-organized and over-coached,” Dr. Côté says.
Dr. Côté admits that potential superstars eventually have to move to get superior training, but specialization before age 13 or 14 is more likely to produce a tired-out teen than a Tiger Woods, he says.
Then there’s what might be called the boredom factor. As Jason Campbell once said, in Taylorsville, “you have nothing else to do but sit outside and throw a football at trees.
Examples of these strong small town / rural athletes are:
Rosie MacLennan’s home town is King City, ON (population 4,902) gold in trampoline. Click HERE for her details.
Brianne Theisen-Eaton’s home town is Humbolt, Saskatchewan (population 5,678) bronze in heptathlon which is a combination of 7 track and fiend events. Click HERE for her details.
Hilary Caldwell’s home town is White Rock, BC (population 19,339) bronze in swimming. Click HERE for her details.
Cheers to all those strong country girls out there managing chores on the farm and playing as much of the sports they love with the dream of one day being an Olympian medalist.

Brief history of PVC: In 1913, German inventor Friedrich Heinrich August Klatte took out a patent on PVC. His method used polymerization of vinyl chloride with sunlight.
The most significant breakthrough occurred in the United States when the company BFGoodrich hired the industrial scientist Waldo Semon to develop a synthetic replacement for the increasingly costly natural rubber. His experiments again produced polyvinyl chloride. However, the material was threatened by the recession in the 1920s and it was under threat of abandonment that Semon conceived the idea of PVC as a water resistant coating for fabrics. Sales took off quickly with a rapidly expanding product range. Demand accelerated again during the Second World War, when PVC quickly replaced traditional material to insulate wiring on military ships.
You could win some bar bets with the little known fact that plastic was first patented in 1913. Have fun with that bit of info.
Dwyer Mfg has a wide range of metric and imperial PVC fittings and pipe ranging from 1/2″ – 2″ & 32 mm – 90 mm. With a low cost supply and overhead system, Dwyer is able to offer our PVC pipe and fittings for less then local suppliers and popular big box stores. Dwyer’s inventory and pricing is available on our web-store. Click the shopping cart to check it out.
You are welcome to shop online and we will ship it directly to you.
Calling or emailing us with your shopping list works just as well. Your parts can be ready for pick up or shipped to you locally or across the country.
Your shipping costs are low due to a 3rd party broker system we use which searches for the lowest cost shipping option for your specific address among the main courier companies.
Usually PVC plumbing parts are used to deliver liquids or compressed air to a desired location in your home or workplace. PVC works great for that due to its low costs, it’s easy to work with and it’s ability to withstand corrosion in harsh environments.
You already know how to use PVC plumbing in your workplace but what about having some fun with it?
Below are a few interesting projects that aren’t too difficult to build in a few hours. Why not involve the kids and create some memories.
Please be safe using power tools and compressed air. SAFETY NEVER HURTS
#1 POP BOTTLE ROCKET LAUNCHER
There are a number of different types of Pop Bottle Rocket Launchers out there. This one is a nice balance between easy to build and safe to use.

During the 6 months I’ve been working at Dwyer Manufacturing a lot has changed, for me and for Dwyer Mfg. My knowledge on multiple feeding systems, plumbing, pumps and various types of agricultural equipment has grown a lot. Dwyer sells a very broad range of equipment so there’s a lot to know, but it’s all good. When I was a farmer, I knew a lot about the equipment we used and paid little attention to the rest, now I’m learning about all the rest.
As mentioned, Dwyer Mfg has changed too. There has been a general organization of inventory so things are easier to find and space created for more merchandise to offer you more choices.
The “Wall of PVC” shows this change easily. With multiple sizes and types of plumbing fittings, things can get out of hand. It’s amazing what some coloured labels and a little time can do.
Ranging from 1/2″ to 2″, we have the PVC pipe and fittings you need.
The Dwyer website has also changed a lot. Information on the lines of feeding systems, flooring, penning, weighing and grinding equipment we sell and service is the foundation of the site.
Shopping when you want is one of the benefits of our web-store, along with the ability to check pricing and availability. The goal is to make it a resource of information and a place to shop when it’s convenient for you, any time of day. After placing your order, shipping is automatically calculated or you can choose to pick it up yourself.
The Dwyer web-store is a place you can order liquid and dry feeding equipment parts, hammer mill parts or shop for tools and multiple types of fasteners and stainless & PVC fittings.
As every experienced shopper knows, finding the clearance rack is job 1. Dwyer web-store has a clearance section too. Click on the graphic below to see the hose clamps (3/8″ – 4″ hose) and PVC faucet we have clearance priced as quantities last.
Good prices can be found at Dwyer in more places then the Clearance section.
Drill Bits are everyday priced to sell.
The shop staff here at Dwyer Mfg use the same drill bits we sell, so you know they are of high quality.
Quality Walter drill bits are all we use and sell, ready to drill multiple materials including stainless steel.
Not only are they tough, they are priced right. With lower overhead, we can price our bits for less then Home Depot.
Sizes ranging from 1/16″ – 1/2″ are in stock, ready to go. Sold individually or in sets.

Another long weekend is fast approaching. Do you have plans or do you need some inspiration for something to do with friends and family?
You don’t have to drive far to have an enjoyable long weekend outing. There are lots of summery things to do close to home.
Here’s a list of a few that come to mind.
Enjoy and be safe.
With the short amount of time we get to enjoy the hot sun, going to the beach is an obvious thing to do.
To find that great beach you’ve never visited here is a link to the best beaches of the Great Lakes:
To find a quieter beach closer to home try:
Port Albert and the the Port Albert General Store’s great food. link to Port Albert General Store
Black’s Point Beach (3 km south of Goderich) is definitely a rural beach. It’s not managed or trimmed but it’s quiet unique atmosphere is something your family will enjoy discovering. Here is link to Swim Guide for Black’s Point Beach along with a map. Link to The Swim Guide
Sunset Beach is another Goderich area beach that not too many people know about. Travel north of Goderich on #21, turn west/left on Sunset Beach Road all the way to the end and you’ll find a beach on the other side of the sand dune.
Goderich Historic Jail
If it’s an evening you looking to fill try visiting the historic jail in Goderich. Any day it’s a great view into the past, but if you go Tuesday or Thursday at 7 pm you’ll get the inside story from actors playing roles of various residents and staff at the Historic GAOL.
I’ve done this myself last year and thoroughly enjoyed learning about the way of life and workings of the institution. FYI, the craftsmanship of the stone and iron is amazing. Ask lots of questions and have fun.
Little know facts:
The jail was built 1939 – 1942 using stone from the Maitland River and some from Michigan.
It ended it’s service more recently then most would think, 1972
The last Canadian public hanging occurred here in 1869
Steven Truscott was held here in 1959
This was designed as temporary housing for criminals but someone with conditions like Down Syndrom or Tourettes could end up there since the society of the times didn’t know what else to do with them
my home is made from the left over stone from the jail, really.
Ice Cream Tour:
Summer is always a good time to enjoy ice cream. Be sure to stop in at your local ice cream shop like the Walton General Store.
Huron Kinloss has a list of local ice cream shops for your enjoyment. FYI, Holyrood has been reported to be the best. Link to the Ice Cream Trail
Sunday July 31 from 12:30 to 4:30, the Walton Raceway is the place to be for lots of flying mud.

Living and working on a farm has a certain charm to it. It’s unlike any other way of life.
The independence is fulfilling and daunting at the same time, the hands-on work lets you see exactly what you did at the end of the day and often makes your muscles ache.
Being a Food Producer has been an honour for me, I hope you see the importance of feeding the world as a calling as well.
Just like every job, every day isn’t a joy. Some are great, like seeing the newly emerging corn at sunrise, the smell of newly cut hay or a newly born animal walking for the first time, but other days seem to drag on and on making you wonder why you got up this morning.
Weather you believe farming is a way of life or strictly a business, it influences who you are. You develop patterns and habits that you think are normal.
I have news for you, Your Not Normal.
Don’t worry though, being normal is not something to be desired. Be yourself, be unique, be a FARMER!
The metal of a farmer is aptly described in this video:
Here is a list of actions that show that you have farmer in your blood, how many fit you or a farmer you know?
You know your a farmer when:
Having lunch in the field is as close to a picnic as you get.
You’ve used the line, “Sorry I have to do chores”, to get out of a bad date.
You see a good looking person in a truck and only check out the truck
“Lacey” or “Frilly” refers to a farm animal but not your nightgown
You’ve never thrown away a pail
Quality time with your hubby means you’ll have a flashlight in one hand and grabbing tools with the other.
You wear specific hats to farm sales, livestock auctions, and holidays.
“Sharing a cab” has nothing to do with a taxi and everything to do with the kids spending time with Dad or Grandpa.
You have used a chain saw to remodel your house
You can remember the fertilizer rate, herbicide rate and yields on a farm you rented 10 years ago, but cannot recall your wife’s birthday
Family weddings and special events are planned around sowing and harvest time.
Your family instantly becomes silent when the weather comes on the news
You consider designer clothes to have labels like “Massey Ferguson”, “Ford” and “John Deere”
You and your dog use the same tree
You buy your Christmas presents at the hardware/feed store
You consider a three piece suit to be coveralls, jacket and a cap
You give directions to your home by including the type and size of trees, and the breed of the cows located in the field and big rocks.
Your idea of a traffic jam is ten cars waiting to pass a tractor

Most of Ontario’s residents might be living inside a large city, but small town Ontario is the soul of the province.
Here is some rural food for thought:
Clearly, then, the city is not a concrete jungle, it is a human zoo. ~Desmond Morris,The Human Zoo
How long can men thrive between walls of brick, walking on asphalt pavements, breathing the fumes of coal and of oil, growing, working, dying, with hardly a thought of wind, and sky, and fields of grain, seeing only machine-made beauty, the mineral-like quality of life? ~Charles A. Lindbergh, Reader’s Digest, November 1939
Man must feel the earth to know himself and recognize his values…. God made life simple. It is man who complicates it. ~Charles A. Lindbergh, Reader’s Digest, July 1972
If you can’t tell, I was born and raised and still live near a small town, if you where too, you’ll be able to relate to this:
Rural Ontario Facts:
Together, Huron and Perth Counties have the same annual agricultural gross reciepts as the 4 eastern provinces, PEI, NfL, NS and NB, combined! $1.6 billion
The population of Southwestern Ontario is projected to grow from 1.61 million in 2015 to 1.78 million in 2041, an increase of 10.8 per cent. Growth rates within Southwestern Ontario vary, with Middlesex and Oxford growing fastest (24.5 and 13.7 per cent respectively). The populations of Lambton, Huron and Chatham-Kent are projected to decline over the 2015–2041 period.
The winter might be long and at times a little boring but it’s a great way to grow up.
We all find ways to occupy our time. How many of these did / are you doing?
9 Things To Do In A Small Town, Megan Aliva
Enjoying life in a town where the night life is non-existent and fun is few and far between.
Another Ontario Pork Congress is Done and Dusted.
Over the two days we talked to lots of people with a variety of interests. Many where producers looking for the new items that will help them do their job easier, faster or more accurately. We talked to lots of industry support people such as veterinarians, feed company reps and other agricultural suppliers.
For Dwyer we had three groups of equipment that seemed to be of most interest to our visitors
Stainless Steel Hammer Mills and Stainless Steel Bin Unloaders and accessories.
BDSwing farrowing crate
Sow Group Housing equipment: computerized feeding station and free access sow crate
Below is lots of information on these products. For more details, call us at Dwyer Manufacturing.
One of Dwyer MFG’s unique strengths is manufacturing with stainless and keeping the price reasonable. Products made from stainless last and last but our prices stay low due to selling direct from us, the manufacturer, to you, the end user. No middle-men to add cost to the product.
The Dwyer Hammer Mill has been on the market for the last 20 years, with steady improvements along the way. These units can not only be found on farms grinding a variety of products, they are also used in many industrial settings.
Customized hub assures even wear to hammers and consistent particle size.
Replacement parts are always in stock and can be purchased on-line now.
With units ranging from 10 – 30 HP and custom loading or unloading available, there is a Dwyer Hammer Mill suited to your needs.
Dwyer Stainless Bin Unloaders and auger accessories are new to the market. Galvanized products work fine when they’re new, but soon they rust and start letting moisture in. Stainless units don’t rust, so your sure to get years of worry free use with the price being about the same as a galvanized unit. Accessories are available to allow these hoppers to work with 300 – 500 series flex augurs, 4″ – 6″ rigid augers, double augers and through-bin situations.
If you want to work smarter not harder, Stainless Bin Unloaders is the way to go.

Quick Canadian Goat Facts
DID YOU KNOW…?
- Goats are finicky eaters that take a lot of time to search out the best snacks. They will often stand on their hind legs to reach the best part of foliage that may be out of reach of sheep.
- Goats are often used as companions for horses. The saying “Got Your Goat” refers to the theft of a racehorse’s companion goat before a race, with the intention of upsetting the horse and possibly affecting the outcome of the race.
- Goats are very social animals that make great pets and companions for other livestock.
- To most people in North America, the term milk is synonymous with cow milk; but on a worldwide basis, more people drink goat milk than milk from cows.

A MIG welder is a staple at most welding shops, as it is here at Dwyer Manufacturing.
Here’s a brief history of MIG welding:
Metal Inert Gas (MIG) welding is a welding process in which an electric arc forms between a consumable wire electrode and the workpiece metal(s), which heats the workpiece metal(s), causing them to melt and join.
Along with the wire electrode, a shielding gas feeds through the welding gun, which shields the process from contaminants in the air.
Originally developed for welding aluminum and other non-ferrous materials in the 1940s, MIG welding was soon applied to steels because it provided faster welding time compared to other welding processes. The cost of inert gas limited its use in steels until several years later, when the use of semi-inert gases such as carbon dioxide became common. Further developments during the 1950s and 1960s gave the process more versatility and as a result, it became a highly used industrial process. Today, MIG is the most common industrial welding process, preferred for its versatility, speed and the relative ease of adapting the process to robotic automation. Unlike welding processes that do not employ a shielding gas, such as shielded metal arc welding, it is rarely used outdoors or in other areas of air volatility.
Most of us have seen a welder operate, but have you seen it in super slow motion?

The farm can be a harsh place on mild steel. Nuts, bolts and threaded rod all rust and seize over time making simple repairs and adjustments a big headache.
When you invest in stainless steel motor mounting parts, your adjustments and repairs will be much easier down the road.
Here are a few different arrangements Dwyer Mfg has in stock to mount an electric motor.
Custom applications are no problem, we can build exactly what you need.
Here’s a couple videos with handy ways to deal with that rusted nut and bolt.
this first one uses standard heat and quick cool to break the rust free.
Note how an old shovel is used to protect equipment close by.
Another technique is a drill out tool. Here’s how that works.
